“Sim Day” in Portland , Oregon – June 15, 2006

An actual Humanitarian Information Center (HIC) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia supporting tsunami relief.  HumaniNet’s Simulation Day will feature a HIC operated by experienced relief volunteers.

Participating Organizations

Who is invited – anyone with an interest in technologies for disaster relief. There is no cost and no registration.
What – “Sim Day” (Simulation Day) to demonstrate a field ready crisis communications center utilizing key technologies in a simulated field environment. HumaniNet’s Sim Day will feature a Humanitarian Information Center operated by experienced relief volunteers.
When – June 15, 2006. Sim Day runs from noon to 6pm. Be there at 5pm for a drawing for free satellite telephone calls to anywhere in the world.
Where – Sunset Presbyterian Church, Beaverton, Oregon.(directions and map)
Why – Meet technology volunteers who worked in the Katrina relief effort and other humanitarian projects around the world. Listen to presentations by leaders in the field of technology and humanitarian assistance. See demos of the latest in voice and data technologies. Test field ready tools for data collection, wireless Internet access, and satellite telephony.
Who is presenting – Humaninet, with nonprofit and corporate sponsors
Sim Day will feature:

Operational satellite communications, including the new broadband BGAN terminal and satellite phones
Wireless networks
New low-power computers from Inveneo
Software applications useful for both a domestic or international disaster
A situational awareness application from Global Relief Technologies, loaded with geospatial data on a simulation scenario for a major earthquake
Solar and battery power to simulate off-grid conditions
Demonstrations by participating service providers

Attendees will also learn about HumaniNet’s initiative to recruit and mobilize technology volunteers for supporting relief operations. This initiative, currently known as the “TechReach International”, is being organized by Dr. Don Bruce, a member of HumaniNet’s board of directors.
Subsequent Simulation Days will be held in San Francisco (September 2006) and Washington , D.C. (November 2006). These three Simulation Days are outstanding opportunities to demonstrate public-private partnerships and our readiness for future emergencies.
