Maps 2.0 at Work in Asia Exercise
In November, the HumaniNet team supported a field simulation exercise in the mountains of Northern Thailand, demonstrating the use of Google Earth for “situational awareness” in an emergency response. See our Maps 2.0 page for a report on the exercise.
You may see a Google Maps display of the exercise locations and activity and download the kml file to see satellite imagery of the exercise area on our Thailand exercise page.
Thanks to a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust, we have posted a series of Webcasts on how to learn the exciting (and easy) ways to use Google mapping tools - see our Maps 2.0 site.
For the latest on satellite communications, see our Current Updates page.
To hear a live radio broadcast using a Sabre BGAN satellite terminal, click here to get an MP3 download (3 Mb). You will hear Steve Quant of World Vision talking over his Sabre from rural Senegal to Bob Rivers of Seattle radio station KZOK.
HumaniNet is a nonprofit organization that supports humanitarian relief and development field teams with practical assistance in global information and communication technologies, or ICT.
Through its growing network of advisors and field users, HumaniNet is helping humanitarian and mission organizations to make the right choices in communications, particularly in remote areas.
HumaniNet provides:
- current information on best practices, favorable service and pricing, and new technology opportunities
- assistance and information on reliable, cost-effective satellite and terrestrial telecommunications equipment and services
- access to relevant technology information from selected service providers, business partners, non-profit organizations, and government agencies
In the last four years, HumaniNet has assisted relief teams responding to the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Darfur crisis, and Hurricane Katrina in the United States. We have also helped NGO teams deployed to Indonesia, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, as well as development and mission organizations throughout Africa, Asia, South America, and the Pacific islands. Thanks to our donors, this support is provided at no cost to participating organizations.
We invite you to meet some of our field partners and hear how better communications are helping them.
Also, we are pleased to present several Testimonials from some of our field partners. Their feedback on "what works and what doesn't" is the most important ingredient in our information base.
Our ICT Features section highlights new developments and presents the results of field tests of new technologies.
For in-depth information on communications solutions and portable computer, please tour our ICT Information Service, which has received a great deal of positive feedback since its launch in April 2004.
